Got excerpts, people? I've been a pretty slack cult-leader this week and only added a few hundred words to Night and Chaos since Sunday. But here are some of those words for your enjoyment!

Snippety! )How about everyone else? Got anything to share?

ETA - I'm loving everyone's excerpts! I kind of want November to go on forever so I can keep reading what you're all working on.

naomi_jay: (hello cthulhu)

Cthulhu expects! How did the weekend go for everyone? I spent most of mine drinking delicious cocktails and eating delicious nachos working on BLOOD HUNT. Made some headway into the second draft, was appalled at how many typos there were, and inserted a discussion about how Shannon always preferred Wonder Woman to Superman.

I'm up to about 23k on  Night ahd Chaos, but haven't actually worked on it since Friday. How about everyone else?

naomi_jay: (Monster)

Show me what you got, people.

I'm up to this much on Night and Chaos:

21333 / 30000
(71.11%)

I'm thinking 30k is now a conservative estimate for the first draft - I might be edging closer to 40 - 50k, by which time I may as well just give up and write a novel. Anyway, I am currently managing 1k a day. How about the rest of you?
naomi_jay: (sparklethulhu)

It's our first excerpt-posting! And Cthulhu expects great things from you:

I'll go first, since I'm ... here. I'm currently meeting my 1k a day target for Night and Chaos:

19574 / 30000
(65.25%)

And here's an excerpt to prove it!

Cut to appease the Elder Gods )

So how's everyone else doing? Let's see what you've been working on!

naomi_jay: (hello cthulhu)

I suppose some of you may have already started, thanks to time zones and whatnot, but if not, here we go! Anti-Nano kicks off today, and I'll be demanding your first excerpts on Wednesday. Good luck to everyone!

naomi_jay: (absinthe)

This weekend I shall mostly be working on the second draft of BLOOD HUNT, and hopefully a little bit on Night and Chaos, depending how things go. How about everyone else?

So, I have linkables:

The first urban fantasy story I ever wrote, Cassandra Lee, made it into Static Movement's Something From The Attic 2 anthology. Huzzahs! I re-read it and did a quick polish before submitting, and I'm shocked at how awful some of the dialogue was. Shocked, I tell you! I still really like the main character though, so I'm glad I was able to find a home for the story after so many years.

Anti-Nano kicks off in two days! Still time to sign up if you're interested. I'm adjusting my goals slightly in light of the BLOOD HUNT edits; I would love to get the second draft knocked on the head this weekend, but I'm also realistic enough to know it might not happen. So Anti-Nano for me will now be dedicated to BLOOD HUNT, Night and Chaos, and Halflife if I finish Night and Chaos. Seems like plenty to keep me occupied for one month.

I'm starting to line up projects for myself for 2011, too. I'm contracted for a third Urban Wolf novel, and hope to be contracted for more after that *crosses crossables*. I plan to write more Ethan novellas in addition to Halflife, because I love the Shoregrave world and I want to inflict it on as many people as possible (and I promised my mum I'd finish up Yasmin's story for her anyway). I've also got two sequels to Night and Chaos planned, Blood and Bones and Smoke and Shadows, at least one of which will involve human sacrifices, so huzzahs! If I can get all three of those onto the Kindle, as per my Plan, by summer 2011, I will be a happy bunny.

I will probably attempt to write the Scarlett novel next year too. This has been on hold way too long. Waaaaaaaaay too long.

Oh, and I heard that the editor with Wild hasn't read it yet, but it's creeping up her TBR pile, so I'm hanging fire on that for a while. *chews fingernails*

So. The weekend! First of all, no Ket :(. That's the bad news out of the way.

The good news is that my writers' group all enjoyed BLOOD HUNT, and had some very helpful notes for me, and I will start the second draft today. I would love to have it wrapped up by the end of the week, but this head cold is still making me pretty ineffectual, so we'll see.

The other news is that I got some more work done on Night and Chaos. Behold!

16562 / 30000 words. 55% done!

And the other other news is that this is your last week to sign up for Anti-Nano!
naomi_jay: (hello cthulhu)
Points of Interest:

It's October 13th! Which means there are still eighteen days to sign up for Anti-Nano, if you haven't already joined my fledgling cult. And you should totally join - there might be cupcakes! You can certainly never rule out the possibility, anyway.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] laburton has re-released her urban fantasy novel, STORM OF MAGICK on Smashwords (and I believe the Kindle release is imminent). You should check it out.

In other news, I have A Plan to rid myself of my horrible job and start a new life at a cocktail bar in the tropics somewhere less teeth-achingly stressful. Part of this plan involves writing lots of novellas and publishing them on the Kindle to make some pocket money. I know! I'm backtracking. I do think there's a lot of potential pitfalls involved in self-publishing, and I do find the "We'll show them all!" attitude of a lot of self-pubbers towards those of us working towards traditional publishing tedious. I still believe everything I said back in August about why I want to write and what I want from my writing career. I don't think traditional publishing is dead, and I still believe I have a shot at the agent-publisher-bookshop dream, despite a ... down-turn on the agent front recently.

That said, I want to change my life. My job makes me deeply unhappy and I can't afford to just quit, sadly. But I had this epiphany on Monday morning whilst stuck in traffic on the way to my horrible job: There's something I can do about it.

I can write and put what I write on Amazon and see what happens. I'll still be writing novels for small presses and with the intent to submit to agents. That part of my plan will never change; I believe wholeheartedly in my dream. But if I can make enough money self-publishing to go part-time next year ... well, I need that. I need to change something or I'm going to fall apart. I'm prepared to take a few risks in order to change my situation now, something I've been afraid of doing in the past. I shouldn't be afraid. I should be brave. This is me being brave and taking a risk.

(Actually, trying to make head or tail of Amazon's Kindle guide is taking a risk. An FAQ should not have subfolders and videos. Just saying okay?)

I had a very useful conversation with [livejournal.com profile] nathreee  recently that helped me clarify my thoughts on this matter and pushed me to make a decision. I've always said that I don't think it has to be "either or" when it comes to self-publishing versus traditional publishing, and I think I'm a good enough and self-aware enough writer to do this the right way. So that's that. Watch this space. This may lead to my Paranormal Romance Secret Identity being revealed, but more details when I have something worth discussing in details.

The other part of my plan is to step up the job hunt, because whatever happens I need to get away from the Institute. I applied for two jobs today. Surely if I just keep applying, something will eventually come through, right?

Anyway, this post went a bit off-topic. I'll leave you with this message from our Anti-Nano sponsor:

naomi_jay: (green butterfly)

No more work until October 11th! Huzzahs! That's a whole week of nothing but doing whatever I want to do, and what I mostly want to do is nothing. Well, there are plans. But they're fun plans, so it's okay.

The Plan - Writing

1. Finish my steampunk story, Dr Dewson's Analytical Soul Decipherer, for submission to Static Movement's steampunk anthology.
2. Finish critiquing a friend's novel for her (it's fabulous!)
3. Get cracking on the Scarlett novel, which still needs a title. I've got about 2k already; I'd like to have added to that by the end of next week.

The Plan - Miscellaneous

1. Apparently on Monday we are hosting a Ross Noble/The Human Centipede night. I can't imagine The Human Centipede improves on a second viewing or anything, but it seems I can't stop it happening. At least there will be Ross Noble to make it better.
2.[livejournal.com profile] chaostheory  has cocktail vouchers! I have a great love of cocktails! It's a match made in heaven.
3. I would like to teach Ket not to use me as a toilet. Or at least I would like to teach him he can also use Kyle as a toilet, should he choose. I'm not sure exactly how I will achieve this, but it may involve buying a flute for snake-charming or something.

Why yes, that is a beautiful silk kimono you're about to crap on, Ket.

And remember, the Anti-Nano Cult is now up and running. If you're interested, check it out and sign up! Everyone's projects sound very cool so far, and I'm really looking forward to reading the excerpts throughout November.
naomi_jay: (sparklethulhu)
I tried to think of a snappier title, but I had a lot of cocktails last night, so...

Yes! The Anti-Nano sign-up beings here! If you love the idea of Nanowrimo but know 50k is an impractical target for you, never fear! Join the cult, and dedicate November to writing as much (or as little) as you want in the company of like-minded writers.

Just leave a comment here stating your goal and what you'll be working on. I'll be doing bi-weekly check-ins throughout November (Mondays and Fridays), and once a week there'll be excerpt postings here (Wednesdays). You can sign-up any time throughout October.

I'll get the ball rolling: I'm going to be working on Halflife, the second Shoregrave novel, and I'm aiming for 1k a day.

Don't be shy - come join me, and feel free to spread the word! The more, the merrier, right?

naomi_jay: (penis)

As you can see, the Anti-Nano Cult will be sponsered by Cthulhu Himself. Because there's no motivation like fear of crippling insanity.

Anyway, I'll be posting an official Anti-Nano sign-up post next week on October 1st, but I wanted to do a quick post now to throw around some thoughts. Mostly, I want people's ideas on check-ins. Obviously we need to report our progress to each other to keep the momentum going and to make those who are falling behind feel bad about themselves. And we only have a month, so weekly check-ins don't seem regular enough to me.

However, I am nothing if not a democratic cult leader, so what do you think? The options are weekly, daily, or bi-weekly check-ins. I'm leaning towards bi-weekly, personally.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] out_totheblack has suggested posting snippets of what we're working on too. How about bi-weekly check-ins and weekly excerpt postings?
naomi_jay: (typewriter)
I am well up for starting cults, all the time.

Anyway. If you're like me, about this time of  year, you start getting excited about Nanowrimo. The writing! The social events! The challenge of writing 50k in a month! It all seems brilliant and so easily done. Just, what? 1666.6666666666666666666667 words a day, and you're totally there! And who can't find time for 1666.6666666666666666666667 words a day, right?

And then you start, and for the first week you're full of enthusiasm and the muse is there with you, and you're powering through and thrashing the word count every day, and you're so totally winning Nano!

And then one of the following things happen:

1. You skip a day for some reason. Maybe you have a headache, or a social engagement you can't avoid. So the next day you have to write double. But you don't manage that, because writing 3332 words is suddenly really hard. And so you fall short and have to write more the next day, and the next, and the next, until finally you'd have to be writing, like, 7000 words a day to make that 50k goal, and we all know how much that isn't going to happen, so you give up and watch cartoons all month instead. Fail.

2. You suddenly realise that everything you're writing is utter tripe. You panic, flail, try to get back on track, but have lost all confidence, so you give up and watch cartoons all month instead. Fail.

3. That old recurrent arm injury flares up and you're in too much pain to even look at a keyboard. You give up and watch cartoons all month instead. Fail.

(You'll notice a theme here. It's failing and cartoons. Cartoons is how I remedy failure.)

Well, screw you, Nano! There are other ways we failures cartoon fans writers can achieve greatness in November! I'm officially gauging interest in an Anti-Nano Cult. If you want all the cameraderie and goal-setting of Nano without the pressure of getting to 50k, come join me. Set your own target and flip the bird at all those smug 50k-ers. Look, I'll be doing it. If you want to join me, leave a comment so I can figure out if it's worth getting properly organised and christening myself a High Priestess, okay?
