It's not for a lack of trying! I think he gets stabbed at some point and then chased by plague!mutants into a cravasse. But then he heroically returns and later starts a school for the kids of the future dystopia, so they can read. Because humanity has been bombed almost literally back to the stone age in this thing, and yet there's still eyeliner and go-go boots.
