I'm about half way through Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl (thank you for recommending it, Leanne!) and loving it. It's reminding me why I loved history so much at school. It's also making me kind of worried about the upcoming film version, with Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson. I saw Elizabeth: The Golden Age last week, and although it was a fabulous film, they really had played fast and loose with some of the historical elements. I mean, it's been a few years since I did history, but I'm pretty sure Sir Walter Raleigh wasn't at sea when the Spanish Armada thing went down. So yeah, I am worried how the Tudor court will fair on the big screen. Especially as (and no offence to my American brethren) I can't really buy Scarlet Johansson as an English rose. She just looks too much like a twenty-first century girl.

I also saw a trailer for Beowulf, which I really wanted to see up until that moment. Why anyone would think Ray Winston capable of portraying himself as anything other than a gruff, stocky Cockney is beyond me. It was bad enough when he was Henry VIII ("Oi, Kafferine! Gimme a son!") but a viking?!?

Anyway, here are your intermittant NaNo stats:

Total wordcount: 14338

Enter, stage left: Ethan Banning, PI! He smokes, he swears, he says things like "look lady, you better not be bullshitting me." *I heart private eyes*

Reeking of awesomeness: Yasmin spends some time in the spectral realm, Nicomedes has pet snakes called Cerelia and Vespa.

Reeking of sucktitude: I've belatedly realised my spectral realm is heavily influenced by Soul Reaver. I feel I should be over my obsession with that game by now. And yet...

Tonight I am mostly listening to: Caroline Lavelle - Brilliant Midnight.

Crippley hand status: My right wrist is very tender and it's painful to push doors open with it.

For some reason I've never studied Beowulf. Which was weird, cause the other years at school did it, but we never got the chance.

I haven't seen any of it ... I'm very crap at watching TV, lol. I'll wait for the DVD boxset.

It's a great, epic viking story! And the animation of the film looks great. It was only when Beowulf opened his mouth and was all cheeky chappy cockney bloke that the illusion died.

He was quite good at yelling though.

Yay for 'The Other Boleyn Girl'! The last few paragraphs will kill you dead with the brilliance. I thought Elizabeth: The Golden Age was a complete train wreck though. Clive Owen was just Clive Owen, like you said! I think all copies should be burned and people only allowed to watch the original Elizabeth. I think I love Ethan Banning already, btw!

I.. I am very afraid of the upcoming Other Boleyn Girl movie. I can only hope that Natalie has her acting switch ON, and that someone teaches Scarlett how to be someone other than Scarlett. At the very least, it ought to be awesome clothing porn.

I'm going to pretend Elizabeth:The Golden Age is really just a fashion show, and I'll be good.

Private Eyes are teh awesome.

Lol, and his teeth were far too white and straight to be a real Elizabethan courtier.

I think the costumes will be amazing. I'll just have to overcome my aversion to Scarlet and pretend it's all a dream.
