Food diaries are a great idea but never beat yourself up about what you eat or damage your relationship with food. Remember food is awesome! I've got a lot of control issues when it comes to food but I've found that writing a menu in advance is a lot more therepeutic than writing a food diary after eating. I get my Slimming World cookbooks out once a week and follow their principles and also the food-combining thing - that is, mainly carbs OR mainly protein, but not together. Then I look forward to my yummy meals and snacks and know its all healthy, and it doesn't matter if I slip up a bit. If you ever need a recipe idea, tell me what sort of thing you fancy and I'll Facebook you something :)
Also, I'm always meeting friends in coffee places and temptation is a bitch, so I make a point of eating a big healthy meal beforehand then having an Americano with loads of candarel to make it taste nice!
