Let's do something fun!

So, I'm seriously not well. My head feels like it's full of cotton wool, my throat feels like it's full of sandpaper, and I have acheived the grand total of no work so far this morning. Curse this damnable day job! I want to be at home shuffling around in my nightgown, carrying a candle and possibly shouting at my housemaid* to stoke the fire, dammit.

Anyway, in order to take my mind off my decline into Dickensian winter-related ill-health, let's do something fun! Tell me which book you've loved most this year, before midnight tonight (that's midnight wherever you are in the world). I'll pick a commenter at random tomorrow and send them a copy of AFTERLIFE. Huzzah! Spread the word.

*There is no maid.

(((Hugs))) Get well soon!

I read lots of YAs at the beginning of the year, some of which were brilliant. My favourite was Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother.

Thanks! I'm hoping a weekend in bed watching crappy TV will fix me.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well.

The best book I've read this year is The Gargoyle, by Andrew Davidson. You can read my review of it here:

Ooh, you sold me with Dante's Inferno! Will have to check that one out.

[identity profile] weirdnunseven.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain. With final's coming up it's such an inconvenience. I hope you get well soon.

I've red so many books this year it's unfair to pick just one. I loved the details of The Scar by China MiƩville, the depth of Benighted by Kit Whitfield, and the richness of the characters in Sunshine by Robin McKinley. However my ultimate favorite this year was Kushiel's Mercy by Jacqueline Carey. It was the final instalment to a long loved story. I started the series late so I only got this final book this year. It was bittersweet.

Cheers

I love Carey, but haven't picked up the newer Kushiel books yet. I was an emotional wreck at the end of Kushiel's Avatar, lol.

The book I loved most this year was Caitlin Kittridge's Street Magic.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I adored Street Magic! Can't wait to get Demon Bound.

Looks interesting. Thanks!

I have two...

The book I enjoyed working on the most was Buried Tales of Pinebox, Texas (http://horror.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=62934) - it was a blast recruiting the authors, working on the stories and promoting it at conventions.

The I enjoyed reading the most was Fallout (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0979988195?ie=UTF8&tag=flamesrising-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=0979988195) by Derek Gunn - I enjoyed the first two books in the series quite a bit, so it was cool to finally get to the next stage of the story and follow the characters to the end.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, vampires and nuclear war! I want to read those.

[identity profile] etaknosnhoj.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
One of these days I'll make a note of all the books I read in a year so I can remember them. Of course, it'd be a pretty long note. The most recent book I really enjoyed--perhaps enjoyed isn't the right word, but I was certainly blown away by the world-building, tension and characters--was a YA: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

And I fully sympathise on the winter illness. My labyrinthitis has been rearing its ugly head again, exacerbated by the merest sniffle. I spent half of Monday in bed and seriously considered heading back there this morning!

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
EEE!!! I'm reading the sequel to Hunger Games at the moment and it's AWESOME! I recommend you pick up a copy immediately.

Yeah, I took Tuesday off work, and wish I'd done the same today. But it's common knowledge that I may have consumed a margharita or two last night, so I don't think I could convince people I'm genuinely ill, rather than hung over. Sigh.

Hi! I hope you get better very soon!

You ask a very difficult question. :) I've read a lot of great books this year but I guess I'll have to go with Matheson's I am Legend. I finished it in a day. That's quite rare for me because I'm a slow reader.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks :)

I've had I Am Legend on my to-buy-list for years... Must get round to actually buying and reading it soon!

I have loved several = but probably Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires, or Charles de Lint's latest.

I need to get into the Morganville books. I love her Weather Warden series.

This year, the book I've loved the most definitely was "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Here I am thinking "blah blah, I've seen this movie before in Japanese no less. But a good writerly friend of mine reccommended it so I picked up and found...I...couldn't...put...it...down @__@" I was utterly addicted, I couldn't stop reading, I cried when a certain character died (and the last time I cried when reading a book honestly was years and years ago.) and I cried again when I read the end and OH! So good.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
*Hunger Games love* You need to get Catching Fire. I'm not even halfway through and so far all I've done is gasp and cry "no!" and "OMG!"

[identity profile] mitzy-spain.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I read lots of great books this year but the one I enjoy most I think it was Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong, I love all her books

Hope you are feeling better :-)

I love her werewolf books, but haven't read that one yet. Will have to check it out. And thanks!

I've really enjoyed Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series. The most recent was probably the best, but I read and enjoyed them all.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the first one, but I really can't remember if I liked it or not. I might aim to re-read it in the New Year...

Unwind by Neal Shusterman (genre: dystopian YA) was definitely my favourite read of the year. I had seen it in the store a few times before I picked it up, and then it kept haunting my brain until I bought it. It's not without faults (what book isn't?), but it's creepy and moving and heartbreaking all at the same time.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have to check it out. I like creepy and moving!

I enjoyed Jeaniene Frost's Nighthuntress/Bones and Cat series. At Graves End, One Foot in the Grave, Half Way to the Grave and Destined for an Early Grave. http://www.jeanienefrost.com/

I would say "White Tiger", by Aravind Adiga. I really didn't expect to like it, and it was wonderful!

Hope you feel better soon.

This year, one of the books I liked the most was by John C. Wright, "Orphans of Chaos". It's a trilogy, but the first one is pretty great on it's own.

Well, it didn't come out this year, but I really like 'The Darkness That Comes Before" and I've been burning my way through the Sweep serireis by Cat Tiernan.

[identity profile] naomi-jay.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
I want to try some Tiernan stuff. I've read her short stories and loved them, but never tried a novel.

[identity profile] brigidsblest.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. Right now, the book I loved best all year was probably Fragile Eternity, by Melissa Marr.

I have Wicked Lovely on my TBR pile. Will get to it one of these days!

I thought Demon Bound was one of the most exciting books I have read in years. It should be made into a movie,
