naomi_jay: (looks like scarlett)

Many words have been written!

Yes. I have worked through the pain to add many words to Night and Chaos today. I'm inordinately proud of myself. I kinda feel like I'm about half way through now, so I've changed my estimated final word count to 40k. I'm also toying with the idea of changing Ryan's name again. I'm so torn - I love Ryan as a girl's name, but people do keep assuming she's a man. But no other name suits her now! I suppose I could change the spelling so it's more obviously feminine (I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] yolandasfetsos  pointed me towards a site with feminised spellings at one point). But can I live with Ryanne? Maybe it should be Rian? Rianne? Rhian? Someone tell me what to do!

I've also dusted off The Fire Inside(which also needs renaming) and added some wordage to that. I'm determined to write this novel, dammit. Scarlett and Ash are my favourite characters of all time EVER, and I need to force them on you all, guys. If I can persuade myself to let go of the idea that this book needs to be OMGPERFECT! then I'll be fine. In theory it should be the easiest book I could possibly write; I've lived with this world in my head for seventeen years. I know all the characters, all their story arcs, everything. I just need to get over my self-imposed ridiculously high standards for it all.

The guy on the American version of The Office is named one of the really funny spellings of Ryan and it totally looks like a girl's name so I think a spelling change could fix it. Especially for Americans who are only used to Ryan.

I'm so torn. I might just keep the name and feminise the spelling because I'm so attached to it now!

I know someone who named her character Rhine - but that's one syllable.

I suppose you could say that her surname is Ryan, and everyone addresses her by it.

I'm feeling like I have to stick with Ryan now because of this witty banter I wrote yesterday:

"So you're Ryan," he said. "I was expecting a boy."

"So were my parents," I quipped.

I think and alternate spelling is a good idea.
Raian - the ai makes the "I" sound or any of the other spellings you suggested. I've always liked Rain.

Rain is cool. I'll add it to the reserve name list, lol.

I personally like Rianne or Rhian. Rian would work, too. The only problem with changing the spelling is that I mentally pronounce it differently than Ryan. Ryanne would be mostly likely to get the same pronounciation, though I do like the other spellings better.

I think it would be easy enough to logically figure out that Ryan is a girl, but who know. I can see how there might be some confusion.

I think I'm probably overthinking the whole thing. I'll finish the first draft, find some beta readers and see what they think before I change anything!

Sounds like a very good plan.
